Annika Sorenstam Is No Sore Winner

USA Today’s Tom Spousta reports that Michelle Wie got a text message from Annika Sorenstam the day after the Samsung World Championship.

“Annika was not happy to hear of Michelle’s disqualification,” said Wie’s father, B.J. “She encouraged her to keep her chin up and not to get frustrated or disappointed. They were comforting words. Michelle was pretty quiet, but after getting the message from Annika, she was excited.”

This weekend, Wie will present a check for $500,000 toward the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund. On Sunday, she will play golf with Clinton. On Tuesday, she accepted a sponsor’s exemption for the third consecutive year to play in the Sony Open in Hawaii. She failed to make the cut there in her first two attempts, both coming as an amateur.

Oddly enough the AP wire story includes this tidbit:

According to a Callaway Golf official, Sorenstam sent the 16-year-old player from Hawaii an e-mail the next day that essentially said she was sorry Wie was disqualified, that she got a raw deal that she should be proud of how she played.

Is Spousta on top of things in nailing this story, with AP’s reporter confirming it with their source at Callaway Golf, or did Spousta call Daddy Wie after being fed the story by someone at Callaway?

Journalist shop talk aside, Spousta and Sorenstam look like winners in this story. And I’m not even going to start with the Sunday golf with Clinton. That’s too easy.
