Annika, Wie Could Compete Against Men
That’s the conclusion reached by Gavyn Davies of the Guardian UK. Not only does he state the seemingly obvious, he supports his contention that Annika Sorenstam could compete against men in his number crunching (always with the numbers!):
Sorenstam and Wie are not just average women. They are as dominant in their own game as Tiger Woods has been in his. If Annika were to play on the men’s tour, she would do rather well. Admittedly, her distance off the tee is only 264yds, which would place her 199th out of the 200 men on the US PGA tour. But distance is not everything. Annika hits the fairway on 73% of the holes she plays, which would place her 5th on the men’s tour list for accuracy. And, crucially, she takes only 1.75 putts per green, which would place her 20th among the men.
The correct title of the British Open is simply the Open Championship, precisely because it is open to all comers, and is therefore the world championship in all but name. What on earth is the use of a world championship that excludes just over half of the human race from entering?
Impressive. Unfortunately we don’t have similar tour stats for Michelle. Only time will show us the money.
