Wie Curtis Team’s “Shield,” Huarte, Elder at 22

Great AP piece at PGA.com on this year’s Curtis Cup team. This year’s team includes three high school students. Michelle Wie is the youngest of the three.

The story covers how Martha Wilkinson Kirouac handled the U.S. Women’s Open exemption when it came to Wie’s teammates and how she is the buffer between the media and her teammates. Also of note, signs are 17-year-old Paula Creamer and Wie are developing a healthy rivalry. Competition closer to Wie’s age is good for her development, and great for fans who’ll enjoy their competitions in the future.

“I play with tons of junior golfers over the summer, and she’s just another junior golfer,” Creamer said last year at the U.S. Women’s Open, after posting a better score while playing with Wie in the final stage of qualifying. “I don’t really see her as someone beyond me. I’ve played her twice and beat her both times.”

The 33rd Curtis Cup is this weekend, June 12-13, at Formby Golf Club in England. According to the Curtis Cup site there will be no live TV coverage of the event.
