Bohannan to Wie Critics: The Future is Now
Larry Bohannan, columnist for The Desert Sun, defends his pro-Wie, pro-exemption stand in the simplest of terms. It’s called a special exemption for a reason: Wie is extraordinary.
…criticisms, while perhaps well-intended by some, don’t make sense when talking about Wie. That’s because the critics are looking at what has usually happened, and Wie is anything but usual… No tournament, not even the PGA Tour’s Sony Open in January, has been embarrassed by Wie’s play or had to back-pedal from an exemption to her after the tournament.
While golf’s old guard prefers to be seen as defending the kingdom the pedestrian golf audience, the ones who don’t play but are aware of the names Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Michelle Wie, may simply see the ugly taint of prejudicious or at least the smell of sour grapes.
