Wie’s Exemption Raises Specter of Bigotry
The good old boys of golf are at it again. Their racism showed in their criticism of Tiger Woods as he approached pro status. Now they’ve taken to chastising USGA executive director David Fay for granting Wie a special exemption for the 2004 U.S. Women’s Open.
“Like Tiger - but even more so - Wie is the subject of some pretty far-fetched rumors… And as was the case with Tiger, some of the Wie-bashing letters/e-mails I’ve received have the rotten smell of racism, I’m sorry to say.”
Wie has accepted the invitation to play. The 2004 U.S. Women’s Open Championship begins Thursday, July 1 and runs through Independence Day, Sunday.
While Wie may not acknowledge it or even consider it — she is a 14-year-old in 9th grade enjoying her youth — she will be in a position to initiate change in the future, if not sooner. As an Asian woman she will experience more hurdles and criticism than Woods ever experienced.
