How to Demonize a 14-Year-Old in 30 Days

The flap over Michelle Wie’s exemption entry into the Women’s US Open continues. This story is building like the preverbal rock that keeps collecting snow as it rolls down the mountain. Is it possible to turn a 14-year-old girl into a villain? Is there no such thing as bad press?

The San Francisco Gate’s Brian Murphy offers his opinion today on Wie’s exemption in his On Golf column. In it Murphy reasons that USGA Executive President David Fay is crossing the line. For whatever Wie’s potential she’s won a single title and playing the “if she were pro” game isn’t reason enough.

Murphy makes a decent argument when he asks how Wie would have played if it were for money. It’s certainly a different kind of pressure no matter how professional the player. Better still he points out a part of this story we’ve seen before…

The result of all this, sadly, is the first real bout of negative publicity surrounding the formerly sweet and bullet-proof story of the female Tiger Woods.

Stay tuned.
