Michelle part of recent youth moment in sports

Roman Khazin at York University’s student paper, The Excalibur, takes inventory of various other teenage prodigies who’ve entered the limelight in recent years.

Michelle Wie is not the only significant teenager in professional sports today gaining such intense media scrutiny. Sidney Crosby started attracting media attention at the age of 16 and is expected to be the new face of the NHL. Lebron James entered the NBA, right out of high school and quickly became one of the best players in the league. Freddie Adu signed a six-year contract with DC United of the MLS (Major League Soccer) when he was only 14 years old.

On the other hand, there have been many teenagers who could not live up to the hype. Jennifer Capriati, for example, stopped playing tennis for several years after becoming a professional at the age of 14. Alexander Daigle, at 18 years old, was the first overall pick in the 1993 NHL Draft, and drew comparisons to Wayne Gretzky; he never became the great player he was expected to develop into.

On a side note: Remember kids, when entering contract negotiations, nothing says you’re serious more than a massive, disfiguring nose ring. (Don’t miss the video in the sidebar.)
