More Michelle Maturation; Creamer 2-0 over Wie
As the women come in for the weather delay we know there’ll be talk of Michelle Wie’s killer instinct ala Annika Sorenstam’s “quiet focus.” This weekend’s rounds showed Michelle nerves taking over on each day’s front nine. Whether she shakes off today’s +3 start there’s still a matter of how she’ll overcome this hurdle.
Saying that she’ll pick it up as she progresses through her pro career is a given. Others will continue pointing at her age being the main factor. Yes, experience matters, but I imagine there will be a pivotable moment where Michelle finds the edge that’ll help her finish on top and that this event will happen outside the realm of golf.
Teenage wondergirl Paula Creamer won the on the 2004 Curtis Cup 2005 Solheim Cup team and discovered that when you are talented you need to constantly challenge yourself and reassess your goals. She put together two wins early on and her focus belies her personable manner. Is three years of experience and two wins the main difference between Paula and Michelle?
Commentators played the Who’ll Win More game going into the break, but golf isn’t quite like that in my view. You can only play as well as you play. There are no teammates that will help you out of a bind, and you can’t defend against your opponent’s game. You play with what you’ve got.
We expect greatness from those who are exceptional. So like happy parents we watch Michelle and expect plenty good. When it doesn’t always happen pundits will write their columns, but fans like us shouldn’t be frustrated. Time will show doubters wrong, and fans will be rewarded for our patience.
Until then it’s also best to remember that great expectations are often accompanied by great disappointment if we aren’t too careful. (Yeah, I cribbed that off a fortune cookie. You happy now?)
