Pair of prodigies under par; Pressure? Perhaps

There’s a 14-year-old kicking butt out there on the links. Shooting a first round 3 under, 69 for a first place tie at the end of the day, Michelle Wie’s classmate, Stephanie Kono is another up-and-coming teen golf sensation.

For those following Wie this past month the names were familiar. There were two of Wie’s Curtis Cup teammates, Jane Park and Brittany Lang; 16-year-old Jooyoung Yang, a transplanted South Korean living in California; 15-year-old Ya-Ni Tseng of Taiwan, a former Asian-Pacific junior winner who summers in the States; 2003 Ladies Hong Kong Open winner Eva Yoe; 2002 Public Links runner-up Hwan Hee Lee and University of Arkansas junior Courtney Mahon.

Kono made the turn at 1 over, then shot two birdies, a par and two more birdies on the back nine. With defending champion Wie one shot back tomorrow’s play should get pretty interesting.
