Dear Daddy Wie: Keep Aussie Meat-Bags Away From Michelle

July 13th, 2006

WTF, Daddy Wie!

WTF!

I don’t care if Jason Day is the top amateur turned pro from Australia, but you keep those 18-year-olds away from Michelle off or on the golf course.

Hell, you probably do a good enough job scaring them “good” Punahou boys away at home, but when the game is on I don’t want any teenage meat-bag distracting her from her game.

Four penalties: So disgust!

Annika Sorenstam, Michelle Wie, Lorena Ochoa top seeds at HSBC

July 6th, 2006

The HSBC Women’s World Match Play Championship opens today. Summary Coverage beings on The Golf Channel at 8:30 PM (2:30 PM Hawaii Time). Winner takes home $500,000.

Parents, let your kids become duffers.

Now some words from Michelle:

Wie looks ahead to match-play tourney: “I know there are people out there critiquing me, saying I haven’t won or blah, blah, blah, but I don’t really care about that kind of stuff,” she said. “I mean, I’m not here to make it easy for myself. I’m not here to put myself higher than I am. I’m just here to play as well as I can, and if I’m going to win, then I’m going to win.” The long-hitting teenager hopes to take advantage of Hamilton Farm’s many wide, forgiving fairways that favor her powerful game. “It’s a lot of driver-wedge, driver-wedge, so if I can tune in on my wedges, I’ll do well,” said Wie, set to play next week in the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic. “This week is going to be fun. My first time playing match play against LPGA Tour players. I think it’ll be very interesting.”

Thousands of Apologies, School Girl Uniforms, and Other Great Asian Things

July 3rd, 2006

I don’t get out onto Hawaii’s muni’s nearly enough as I’d like, so I won’t say that it’s the reason why postings have been a might bit peckish around here.

However, as observed by comedian Paul Ogata, we Asians apologize for everything. So now I’m apologizing to readers and pundits alike for the lack of fire required in following a phenom like Michelle Wie.

That said, there is a reason for my lack of posts over this springtime, and that is summarized in this post at my entertainment news site Talk Stink.

Check back for more updates here. Until then, “Forgiveness, please!”

Wie Can’t Complain, Except Perhaps for the Pun-ishment

July 3rd, 2006

The Mark Rolfing based headline over at the Honolulu Advertiser puns on Michelle Wie’s bogeying the Unlucky 13th as the sore point of yesterday’s third place finish.

The Honolulu Star-Bulletin’s Dave Reardon takes the preferred approach, opting instead for the birdy on the 10th hole, namely a sea gull, as he takes his pun shot at summing up Wie’s lack of avian love in yesterday’s game: “She got close to a lot, but almost all of them flew away.”

Michelle’s next event is the HSBC Women’s World Match Play Championship this Thursday, July 6 at the Hamilton Farms Golf Club in Gladstone, New Jersey.

Michelle Wie Agrees, Naughty School Girl Uniforms Rock

June 29th, 2006

It really helps that Michelle Wie is photogenic and well spoken in public.

If she were a fat, ugly, drug abusing, hypocritical, talentless, wind bag of a radio personality then you’d have to think she, as someone of high regard in her field, must be purely a creation of media hype.

She’s as entertaining with a microphone in her hands as she is with a driver — and this is a young woman who can knock the ball 300 yard…

She was at turns enlightening and empathetic and always amusing during 30 minutes of Q and A, a huge smile never leaving her face. Here’s some of what we learned yesterday:

» Despite all the money, worldwide travel and hype, she’s still a Hawaii girl at heart.

“I have a lot of sense of pride being from Hawaii, and when they read the card on the first tee, ‘Michelle Wie from Honolulu, Hawaii. It’s just a great feeling to hear that.”

» She loves Punahou, too, but she is a fashionista, and that Punahou dress code really sucks.

“Well, it’s not really a uniform, which is the worst part. If it were a skirt and a tie and a vest thing, I would wear it, because it’s a uniform. But we get to wear our own jeans — it’s really weird, we have to wear like a shirt, it’s like a regular T-shirt, they have a little Punahou mark on it, and they charge you a lot to buy it. … Punahou, please, take away the uniform, please, if you hear this.”

Not all embracing Wie at qualifier

May 25th, 2006

Not all embracing Wie at qualifier: “Wie’s presence in men’s tour events and her attempt to gain entry to the U.S. Open has been met with skepticism from male pros around the world. Recently, European Tour member Jean Van de Velde said, ‘I have no objection to Michelle Wie or any other women playing in our tournaments so long as we are allowed to play in theirs. And, yes, I’m ready to play in a skirt.’”
